The Most Common Garage Door Repair – Garage Door Spring Replacement
A garage door spring replacement is the most common garage door repair we see here in Southern New Jersey. This is unfortunate because a garage door spring is vital to a working garage door, and it’s usually not possible to open your door once a spring breaks.
When you experience a broken garage door spring, give Merchantville Overhead Door a call at (856) 338-1314. We’ll be able to quickly perform a garage door spring replacement and have your door back in working order.

The Types of Garage Door Springs
There are two main types of garage door springs to consider: torsion and extension springs. Most homes have torsion springs installed as they’re safer overall. A torsion spring will be located above the garage door in a long coil. It’s fairly easy to see these springs and notice any damage. These springs function by coiling and drawing the door upward.
Extension springs are located on either side of the garage door, extending back. They’re much longer and take up more room. They operate by extending to allow the door to rise, primarily used for heavier doors.
Our technicians at Merchantville Overhead Door are highly trained to handle either type of these springs and can fix any garage door spring-related issues.
Do I need to replace both springs at the same time?
We recommend replacing both springs together. They were likely installed at the same time and have similar lifespans. if one goes out, the other will soon follow. It will save you time and inconvenience to replace both together.
Can I manually open my garage door with a broken spring?
Don’t try to open your garage door at all—either manually or with the opener. This will only lead to more damage and could be dangerous. Let a trained professional handle the repair for you.
Do you provide emergency garage door spring repair?
We do! We know the frustration of being stuck inside your garage. We’ll come when you call to make sure that your door is fixed as soon as possible.
The Dangers of a Broken Spring
A broken garage door spring can be extremely dangerous. Garage door springs operate in tandem with the cables in order to balance the overhead door. They hold the tension that creates the energy that’s needed to effortlessly raise and lower your door.
When a spring breaks, that tension can cause it to snap back, potentially injuring or damaging anything near it. This is why we don’t recommend attempting to replace a garage door spring yourself. Let one of Merchantville Overhead Door’s highly trained, professional repairmen repair it for you.
We also don’t recommend attempting to open or close your garage door while the spring is broken. This could damage other parts of your door, cause it to come slamming down, or cause the rest of the spring to fly out. It’s better to leave your door alone and let a professional take care of it for you.
New Garage Door Springs
When you get a new garage door spring, you can expect it to last for about 10,000 cycles. Each cycle is one full opening and closing of the garage door. So if you used your garage door only twice a day, your springs would last for roughly 13 years. Most people use their garages more than this, however, so you can expect your springs to work for about 10-12 years.
Annual maintenance on your springs will help them last even longer. With regular maintenance, the spring will be lubricated and tightened, enabling them to run longer. In addition, with regular maintenance, one of our skilled technicians will be able to catch any potential problems before your whole door gets stuck. We’ll be able to recommend a spring replacement before they break, so you won’t be trapped!
