Our Story

Merchantville Overhead Door started in 1936 when two brothers, Theodore Hermanns and Henry Hermanns, decided to combine their skills and build something lasting. Theodore worked as a sales representative for Overhead Door Corporation. Henry was a union ironworker from Cleveland, Ohio. Together, they created a garage door company built on craftsmanship, integrity, and a commitment to taking care of the customer.

What started with two brothers has grown into a four-generation family business. After World War II, brothers Robert Hermanns Sr. and Henry Hermanns Jr., both veterans, took the reins and expanded the product line to include rolling steel doors and other related products. In 1988, Robert Jr. and Edward Sr. stepped into ownership. Today, the fourth generation continues the legacy with Edward Jr. on the team. And at 94 years old, Robert Sr. still comes to work to share guidance and support.

That kind of continuity isn’t common in this industry. It’s the foundation of everything we do.

Edward Hermanns Sr. went on to serve as President of IDEA from 2008 to 2010 and later as President of the International Door Association (IDA) from 2017 to 2019.
